Pieces inspired by the Amazon biome are a highlight at SPFW
In synergy with the winds of sustainability that are bringing COP 30 to Brazil, São Paulo Fashion Week (SPFW) brought the Amazon to its stages through the show of designer Leandro Castro. On October 16, he showcased his pieces developed with inspiration from the Amazon biome, through the project “Local Iconography Amazon Biome” (Iconografia Local Bioma Amazônico), carried out by the Brazilian Association of Companies of Components for Leather, Footwear and Artifacts (Assintecal), in partnership with Sebrae Nacional and Sebrae Pará. To develop the pieces, the designer undertook an immersion in the Amazon at the project’s invitation.

The creative coordination of the “Local Iconography Amazon Biome” is led by the acclaimed designer Walter Rodrigues, who is currently head of Assintecal’s Research and Design Center (Núcleo de Pesquisa e Design). “Our goal with local entrepreneurs is, through design, sustainability, and iconographic research, to train and strengthen them for new opportunities, such as COP 30, focusing on valuing local culture as a competitive advantage,” explains the designer, who also partners with sustainability strategist Júlia Webber on the project. The research, which includes elements such as biome, history, architecture, cuisine, beliefs, artisanal knowledge, popular festivals, and a color palette representative of the region, will be presented at COP 30, in Belém/PA, from November 10 to 21.
On the 16th, Rodrigues was at the institutional stand of Sebrae Nacional, where he spoke about the project and presented some of the materials already launched, in addition to the pieces designed by Leandro Castro.
About the project The “Local Iconography Amazon Biome” project was created with the objective of valuing the cultural and productive identity of the Amazon, encouraging the sustainable use of the forest. Through the initiative, 19 local micro-entrepreneurs, groups, and artisans are being supported in the creation of biomaterials for the fashion industry, with the aim of valuing the Amazon’s territorial identity. The businesses involved in the project, which partnered with designer Leandro Castro, were: Coomflona – Cooperativa Mista da Flona Tapajós, Cuias Aíra – Associação das Artesãs Ribeirinhas de Santarém (Asarisan), Nunghara Biojoias and Trançados do Arapiuns.
