Sustainability is present in the footwear components market. In the athletic shoe segment, insoles and fabrics feature environmentally-friendly elements and enhance comfort when doing physical activity. With its eco-friendly DNA, the Cofrag Group is one of these companies focused on finding recyclable materials, like the ones that can be found in sports shoes.
Specifically for this market, the company manufactures products such as EMANA®, which improves sports performance and stimulates microcirculation. Refresh Thermo is a fabric that acts as a sunblock by reflecting the sun’s rays and decreasing heat absorption, thus adding to comfort and improving performance during physical activity. The temperature-controlling element allows for enhanced thermal comfort. In turn, P.A.N.G., with the Amni ® Dynamic technology, provides sun protection, improved absorption and faster drying. In addition, there is the Knit technique, through which it is possible to create shoe uppers with any kind of yarn, including yarn from sustainable sources. “In our units, we’re developing special foams, such as those of activated carbon, which also bring benefits to the sports sector”, said Carla Haag, executive director of the Cofrag Group, who emphasized that the company’s objectives include developing materials that combine sustainability and technology.
Various other products manufactured by the Cofrag Group also stand out in the footwear sector as a whole. Among such products are the Scrap Tech insole, which is thermoformed using recycled raw materials, such as waste foam from the production process or previously-recycled materials; and the Tech Green insole, with resins made from sugar cane, which helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, there are fabrics made from recycled PET bottles and biodegradable fabrics made of polyamide yarn that decompose within three to ten years.
Ms. Haag points out that for quite some time the company has been working with major national and international sports brands. Footwear manufacturers looking for comfortable and functional materials have sought the company willing to establish partnerships. “When they see our technologies, our partners are surprised and satisfied because our materials meet the needs of customers and add a competitive edge to their final products”, commented Ms. Haag.
